Flight Description

The South West Extended scenic flight departs Hobart to fly over the Derwent Estuary and along the D'Entrecastreaux Channel where brilliant blue waters separate the white, sandy beaches of Bruny Island and the Tasmanian mainland.

You pass over the mouth of the Huon River and past Southport Lagoon and on to Cockle Creek. From here you will see South East Cape, the southern-most point of Australia, and the harsh South Coast. The cliffs and rock features in this area have been carved by thousands of years of the inclement weather that is typical of the southwest.

In contrast is the beach of Prion Bay and the New River Lagoon, as well as the Ironbound Range, a challenge to bush walkers. Then we turn to Cox Bight for a beach landing if conditions are suitable. If not, we will fly a few miles inland to the Melalueca airstrip (at Bathurst Habour) where light refreshments will be served.

After a short break to take in the remoteness of it all, the flight resumes to take in the beauty of Bathurst Harbour and the unforgettable views of Federation Peak and the Western Arthur Ranges. With sheer cliffs and numerous lakes, this is some of the most stunning scenery in Australia.

The flight then heads north along the Eastern Arthur Range towards Lake Pedder, and the stark contrast of Mount Anne's rocky peak. From there you will see wild river valleys on your way back to Hobart city where you will see Mount Wellington from a completely different perspective. From Hobart city we fly over the Derwent River and return to Hobart Airport where your journey commenced.

The Deluxe South West Scenic includes an extended time on the ground for a guided tour of the historic alluvial tin mine and Denny King's house and a visit to the bird hide to view the endangered Orange Bellied Parrot. In addition we will be offering a quality Tasmanian food platter including smoked salmon, a selection of King Island cheeses and Meadowbank quality red or white wines.
